Hey!
My name is Bex! I am an academic and journalist currently in Memphis. I love media history, music, advocacy, and combining the three!

More about me
I am a Memphis based academic and journalist. I am especially interested in advocacy journalism and the intersection of the media and social justice.
I currently produce a podcast based on my research called “Should I Write or Should I Rock?” My research, and this podcast, looks at the ways that different civil rights movements were reflected in music. Although music is technically included in “The Media,” it’s never the one people think of first. I argue that music is a form of advocacy journalism and a way that musicians have expressed the ideals of the public in a completely biased way- almost like a passive protest as a way to find community and encourage policy makers to listen to their constituents.
I have worked in print and radio, and have dabbled in public policy and activism. I love music, reading, and learning. I have a master plan to be in school forever, and so far it’s working. I am a graduate of Germanna Community College with an associates degree in general education, Marshall University with a Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Journalism, and am currently enrolled as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Memphis pursuing a Master of Arts in Mass Media Research.
